About my Practice

Hello, my name is Stephanie McLeod-Estevez, and I am a licensed clinical professional counselor practicing in Portland, Maine. Thank you for visiting my website. You will find basic information about my practice, education and training, orientation and approach to psychotherapy. Additionally, you will find short blog entries expressing my reflections about psychological themes and concerns. The blog offers an opportunity to have a better sense of my orientation as a psychotherapist and perhaps to further enhance the work we do together. However, the best way to discover if I can be of assistance to you is to schedule a face-to-face consultation to discuss your concerns and treatment goals.

Professional Experience:

I began my private practice in 2009, prior to that I worked as a psychotherapist in a variety of settings which include: outpatient, partial hospitalization, and community based treatment services. I currently provide individual, family and group psychotherapy as well as consultation services.

Education and Training:

I have a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling and Expressive Therapies from Lesley University. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Indiana University. I have been working in the social service profession since 1996 and as a psychotherapist since 2004.

Orientation and Approach to therapy:

I approach psychotherapy from a belief that forming a secure, safe therapeutic relationship is the foundation for healing. Initially, we will focus on the immediate needs being brought into therapy and explore the current and past experiences that influence how you are coping. Using an eclectic and holistic approach, I will draw from a variety of therapeutic methods, including: psychodynamic, expressive arts, cognitive behavioral, mindfulness and mind-body awareness. Ultimately my goal is to assist clients in feeling empowered by increasing awareness and understanding of the dynamics, behaviors, and emotional distress that cause imbalance so that lasting changes and restoration of emotional, physical, and spiritual balance can occur.

Scope of Practice:

I am experienced in treating adolescents and adults with a broad array of psychological concerns, which include but are not limited to: anxiety, depression, grief and loss, eating disorders and other compulsive behaviors, post traumatic stress disorder, attachment and relationship concerns, substance abuse, death and dying. If a referral is necessary to help you attain your treatment goals, I will recommend other resources and providers in the community.

Payment and Insurance:

I am paneled to accept health insurance. If I am not a provider under you insurance plan, we can explore utilizing out-of-network benefits when applicable.  Clients may also decide to pay privately.
